The Frozen Rose
Snow fell as Yukai looked out the window. Her long silver hair danced around her pale face. Her powder blue eyes looked out into the distance. Once again she was home alone during a light snow storm. She longed to go outside and take a walk along the snow covered trail that led into the woods.
Yukai sighed. She knew her parents would kill her for going into the woods during a snow storm without telling anyone. Yukai just had to get out. She walked over to the closet and pulled out a white winder jacket with fur trim on the hood, a pair of white gloves, fabricated white snow boots, and a long white scarf. Then she started putting them on.
Once she had her jacket, gloves, boots, and scarf on she headed outside. She pulled her hood up and scanned the area for the trail to the woods. She spotted a low red plant and followed the trail of them. She walked until she was in a large wooded area. She looked around and noticed everything had died when the snow had fallen.
She looked over to where the rose patch was. She dug up handfuls of snow. She saw all the roses were dead. One appeared to be fine. She lifted it up.
It felt cold to her. She took off her glove and felt the stem. The rose was frozen. She put it in her pockets until she could get home to thaw it out. She wouldn’t let this rose die like the others.
Before she could follow the trail of the low red plants to her house it started to snow. The snow blurred her vision when she tried looking for the plant. The snow fell heavier and heavier until there was one more foot of snow on the ground. She pushed through the snow attempting to get home before it snowed heavier yet. She pushed and pushed until she reached a sidewalk.
She rested on the sidewalk. She stared up at the white sky watching the snow drift more lightly. She closed her eyes and put her hand in her pocket. She felt something cold. The rose.
She nearly forgot about the frozen rose. She got on her feet and continued walking towards her house. She felt the temperature drop. The chilled wind blew. She had to get to her house not only for the rose’s sake but for hers.
She walked quicker and quicker trying to get to her house. She noticed something lying in the snow. She walked over to it and noticed it was a child. A young girl lying in the snow with her eyes closed. Yukai tried talking to the girl but it seemed like the girl couldn’t hear her.
Yukai picked the child up and continued walking toward her house. Once in a while she would stop to rest and check on the girl. Yukai put her long scarf around the child to keep her warm. When she reached her house she laid the child on the couch and covered her with a long blanket. Yukai made some hot coco and turned the furnace up.
Yukai changed out of her winter clothing and into a sweater and jeans. When the hot coco was done she tried waking up the girl. Yukai knelt beside her and whispered into her ear “Are you awake? I have some hot coco for you.” The girl slowly opened her eyes and took the mug.
“Thank you.” Then she shyly sipped the hot coco.
“Are you warm enough? Do you need another blanket?” asked Yukai. Yukai went into the kitchen and got another mug of hot coco for herself.
“I’m warm, thank you.” The girl replied softly.
“You can stay here until my parents come home and then we’ll bring you to your house.” Oh I almost forgot my name is Yukai.”
The girl frowned.
“What’s wrong?” Yukai asked.
“I don’t have a house. I ran away from the family that adopted me.” Said the girl.
“Oh…I’m sorry” Yukai said taking the empty mug from her.
“It’s ok.” The girl replied softly.
“Do you have a name…?” Yukai asked.
“Yea my name is Becky.” Replied the girl.
“So, Becky, are you excited for Christmas?” Yukai asked.
“Not really, my family said Santa’s not coming…”
“Becky how old are you?” Yukai asked thinking about how old girls are who still believe in Santa.
“I’m eight.” Replied Becky.
Yukai had an idea. She was going to ask her parents if they could readopt Becky. Now was her chance. The door opened and her mom and dad walked in.
“Excuse me Becky; I’ve got to ask my parents something.”
Becky nodded and watched Yukai walk towards her parents. Yukai explained to her parents what happened and asked and they could adopt Becky. Her parents thought about it and wanted to see Becky. They went over to Becky with friendly smiles. They talked to her for a while but Yukai couldn’t tell what they were saying.
Then her mother walked over to her and said, “She’s very polite and I think she’ll be a great addition to the family.”
Yukai smiled happily and hugged her parents before sharing the news with Becky.
“Is Santa coming here?” Becky asked smiling.
“Yep and he’s going to bring you so much presents that the whole floor will be covered with them.”
Becky danced around happily and hugged Yukai. Yukai also danced around with Becky. Two weeks later it was early Christmas. Becky ran down stairs with Yukai behind her. Becky got everything she wanted.
Not everything she wanted could be wrapped. Becky wanted a loving family and she got just that. She loved her older sister Yukai, her mom Sarah, and her dad Joe. Yukai loved having Becky around and so did her parents. They were one big family and nothing would change that.
Every night Yukai would tell Becky about the two frozen roses she found. The real rose and Becky
