One of the Japanese mythologies talk about how the fox spirit flew to Japan from China. The fox, together with the badger, has shapeshifting powers and became a distinct icon in Japanese folklore.
In another Japanese tale, "The Fox, the Monk, and the Mikado of All Night's Dreaming", there is a bet between a badger and fox shapeshifter. The fox shapeshifts into a woman, and a monk fall in love with her, winning whatever worldly affection the monk was capable of giving. The badger, upset at losing the bet, fought the fox.
I believe the connection is clear-while the Shukaku is a raccoon-dog, there is no mistaking the connection between it and an overly large badger. The 'badger' Shukaku was angry with the fox- Kyuubi-for winning the 'bet', or in this case, foiling the Sand and Sound's plans for the destruction of the Hidden Leaf.
Or maybe I'm just over thinking it?
